THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TARGETING AN AUDIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING A MOMENT
I think I finally experienced what every marketer hopes to create: the right message, for the right person, at exactly the right moment.
I'm not talking about clever ad copy or a retargeting campaign. I'm talking about an ad that made me feel understood in one of the most ordinary moments of parenthood. Let me explain.
My husband and I were recently catching up on Survivor 50 on Paramount+. Suddenly, at the start of a contentious tribal council, our youngest needed a diaper change. I quickly grabbed the remote to pause so as to not miss a moment of the action. When I returned, and before I could press play, I noticed the pause screen ad was a diaper brand (Huggies, to be exact). I smiled at the irony and spent a few more seconds reading the headline. While I can’t recall verbatim, the ad’s message was along the lines of “some things can’t wait for a commercial break.”
It totally and completely stopped me in my tracks. I was delivered an ad about pausing life to change a diaper while I was doing exactly that.
As much as I love to obsess over the parameters of a perfectly executed campaign, like audience targeting, creative testing, channel selection, etc., the “magic” in this example can’t wholly be attributed to any of that. It’s less about the excellent targeting and creative execution used here and more about a much bigger picture.
The reason this moment felt so memorable and special was because Huggies demonstrated that they completely understood their target audience instead of just saying they do. They turned an ad impression into an opportunity to really connect with their audience through empathy by saying, “Yep, we know exactly why you had to pause your favorite show.” It was funny and relatable and didn’t feel intrusive the way other ads can sometimes feel.
As a digital media nerd, this ad – rather, this moment – really resonated with me. And that’s coming from a mom who has exclusively and loyally purchased Pampers diapers for years. It shows that great advertising doesn’t have to be gimmicky or invasive. Actually, when done extremely well, advertising makes your audience feel seen.
That's why every engagement at Heff House Digital starts with research and deep audience intelligence. Because when you truly understand your audience, your marketing feels less like persuasion and more like recognition.
